Loss of vision is compensated by an artificial retina

Today, about 35% of the world’s population has visual impairments. About 1.7% of all people with visual impairments are either on the verge of blindness or have gone blind. On this occasion, many years of research are being carried out in American companies for the production of implants, which could return people with partial or complete loss of vision the ability to see normally, lead an active lifestyle, build a career and family life. A prosthesis was invented that is suitable for use in people with retinal degeneration.

This implant is a replacement for the affected retina. It is a miniature video camera that is installed on glasses, the picture from it is fed into a microprocessor, processed by a miniature processor, and then enters through an implant into a person’s head via a wireless channel. The implant, due to the array of electrodes, stimulates the cells, which makes it possible for a person to see. At the same time, vision is given primitive, but a person will be able to move around the house without assistance, recognize people, see large objects, read large letters.

The implant consists of a receiving coil, an electronics unit and an array of electrodes (60), a transmitting antenna. When a picture is transmitted to the human brain, then he sees the environment as a picture consisting of 60 points of light. The field of view when using such an implant is 30 centimeters. In the projects of scientists of American companies there is the development of artificial retinas with a high resolution, reaching up to 1520 pixels (that is, color dots). This will allow people with no vision to see the world.
